Three decades of obituary writing

Tim Bullamore is an award-winning obituary writer for The Times and the Daily Telegraph newspapers in London, papers that are famous for their entertaining treatment of obituaries. He originally specialised in obituaries for classical musicians, but has since broadened his canvas to include figures from the worlds of business, royalty, sport, theatre and much more. More recently he has additionally contributed obituaries to the British Medical Journal. Although he writes many obituaries in advance for the paper’s “morgues”, he is at his best when against a tight deadline and has been known to fill a full page of newsprint in under three hours.

Tim was shortlisted for the British Press Awards in 2002, 2016 and 2018 and 2020, and won a Society of Professional Obituary Writers award in 2007. He has given entertaining lectures on the art of obituary writing for audiences at Columbia University, New York; Haverford College, Philadelphia; the University of New South Wales, Sydney; City University, London; and the South Bank Centre in London.

After a period working as an agent for classical musicians in London, Tim took up journalism in the early 1990s. For the rest of that decade he worked for The Bath Chronicle in his adopted home town while contributing to national newspapers. He turned freelance in 1999, the year in which his first book Fifty Festivals: the History of the Bath International Music Festival (with a foreword by Jonathan Dimbleby) was published.

Since then has contributed to the Peterborough diary column on The Daily Telegraph, written for Classic CD magazine, been heard on BBC Radio 2 and Radio 3 and contributed to several sections of The Times, Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Guardian and the Daily Express. He has also been a sub-editor at The Times, helping to produce both the Arts and the News pages. From 2007 to 2021 he was also owner, editor and published of Jane Austen’s Regency World magazine, additionally publishing a couple of spin-off books.

For ten years Tim was chair of governors at one of the leading primary schools in Bath. He was also a city councillor for eight years and stood for Parliament in Gloucester City in 2001. He holds an MBA from the University of Bath and has undertaken postgraduate research into the art of obituary writing at the University of Cardiff. He is now based in Edinburgh.
